Hey strangers! I’ve been away from the webby world for awhile (okay a few days but that feels like forever in internet years) and I haven’t been crafting either. The boyfriend’s mom was visiting and we had a lovely time. But now I’m back to real life (where I don’t get to go out to dinner every night, sad.) I was feelin’ the crafty itch, so I carved this flower tonight. Too sleepy to bust out the brayer and ink (I really need to get a few ink pads) so we’ll see how it actually prints soon.

My taste is a strange mix of modern, girly, and quirky, but oh how this photo from Esty seller LeSophie appeals to the girly-girl in me. Isn’t it so swoon-worthy and delicious? I’ve been looking for some affordable art—the walls in our apartment are still bare—and this lovely is going on my wish list. (Not sure how the BF will feel about frilly pink tutus. Can I claim that they’re abstract?) Love!

I’m kind of a crazy person about leftovers. As in, I don’t really eat them. I eat some things (pizza, homemade frozen pesto and spaghetti sauce) but usually I refuse to eat perfectly good left-over food. I know it’s wildly wasteful—but I’ve had several bouts of food poisoning, the worst of which was a nasty case of E.coli that sent me to the emergency room. Lovely.
So I was pretty excited to read about Still Tasty while browsing Lifehacker, because let’s face it, who can afford to toss perfectly good food these days? The site tells you how long tons of foods last (beyond the old look and sniff check), and answers other burning questions, like: “Is it safe to refreeze meat that’s been thawed?” It’s all retro housewifey of me to be concerned about such things, but honestly, I totally want to know. I’d rather not ever have to go back to NYU Medical Center’s emergency care facilities, thank you very much.

My mom bought these type blocks years ago on a family vacation in Maine. I can still remember the shop where we bought them: Little kids tend to get antsy in stores that don’t sell toys, but I was fascinated by all the letters and boxes and the slightly musty smell of the shop. These little treasures had been living in a drawer at her house, so last year when I was home I decided I’d bring them back with me to make some sort of shadowbox/vignette. Sadly, despite their exciting journey from Ohio to New York, they still live in a drawer. I just can’t decide what to do with them. This little photoshoot was the most action they’ve seen in years. Any ideas?

Spent way too much time playing the font game this afternoon and not enough time making cards. Oops. Blaming I love Typography.

Made some tissue paper pom poms today because I couldn’t bear to take down my little jar of sticks just yet. They’re a little trickier to make than I remembered—you have to have just the right number of layers of paper, and you have to be really careful when you’re pulling the them apart. (I also think the smaller they are, the harder they are.) But they’re so pretty, it’s totally worth it!
Martha has some instructions if you want to DIY. (I read some of the comments first which is always helpful.) For small poms, loosely follow the instructions for the napkin rings. (No more than 4 layers of paper for the little guys! I learned the hard way.) I used string instead of floral wire because I didn’t have any and it worked just fine. Yay, spring!

I have inexplicably decided to fixate on brass scale weights (you know, the kind you used in 5th grade science). So I think I’m going to buy this one on eBay to use as… a paperweight? A tchotchke? We’ll see.

This is the work of artist Aoyama Hina, who makes her paper cut art by hand with just a pair of tiny scissors. Amazing. I can’t begin to imagine the kind of patience you’d have to have. Read more at Paper Forest, and check out the artist’s Flickr here.
